Côte d’Ivoire Stun France as Les Bleus’ World Cup Preparations Hit a Bump

France’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have come under scrutiny after a surprise 2-1 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in a warm-up match. Les Bleus took the lead through Rayan Cherki, but goals from Guéla Doué and Amad Diallo helped the African champions complete a second-half comeback victory.

The result highlighted areas of concern for coach Didier Deschamps. France struggled to maintain control after halftime and appeared vulnerable to Côte d’Ivoire’s pace on the counterattack. Deschamps admitted his side lost control of the match during the second half and acknowledged the challenge posed by the Elephants’ direct attacking approach.

The defeat came with some context. Several key Paris Saint-Germain players were unavailable following their Champions League commitments, while Deschamps used the opportunity to experiment with different combinations and give minutes to a broader group of players. Nevertheless, the match exposed defensive weaknesses that France will be eager to address before the tournament begins.

Despite the setback, the French camp has sought to keep the result in perspective. Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni and defender Lucas Hernandez stressed that the match was part of the team’s preparation process and not an indication of their overall readiness for the World Cup. Deschamps described the loss as a timely reminder of the standards required to compete at the highest level.

France responded positively in their next warm-up fixture, defeating Northern Ireland 3-1 thanks to a hat-trick from Michael Olise. However, the match also highlighted lingering defensive concerns after France conceded from a counterattacking move.

With their World Cup opener against Senegal approaching, France are still widely regarded as one of the tournament favourites, boasting a squad that includes Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and the in-form Michael Olise. However, the defeat to Côte d’Ivoire served as a reminder that talent alone will not guarantee success and that improvements will be needed if Les Bleus are to challenge for the title.
