Jadon Sancho: Chelsea Set to Sign Man Utd Winger Permanently Despite £5m Get-Out Clause

Chelsea are still expected to sign Jadon Sancho permanently in the summer, despite reports revealing a £5m escape clause that could allow them to terminate their obligation to buy the Manchester United winger.

Sancho joined Chelsea on a season-long loan last summer, with a £25m mandatory purchase clause triggered by certain performance thresholds. However, new information suggests the Blues could back out of the deal if they are willing to pay a £5m penalty to United.

Chelsea’s Winger Dilemma

Chelsea remain in the market for attacking reinforcements, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding Mykhailo Mudryk’s future. The Ukrainian winger was provisionally suspended by the FA in December after failing a doping test, leaving his long-term status at Stamford Bridge in question.

This has led to speculation about whether Chelsea will move forward with the permanent signing of Sancho or explore other options in the transfer market.

Sancho’s Mixed Spell at Stamford Bridge

Sancho made a bright start to his Chelsea loan spell, registering three assists in his first three Premier League appearances. However, his form has since dipped significantly. The 24-year-old has failed to contribute a goal or an assist since January 4 and has managed just one shot on target since Boxing Day.

Despite his struggles, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has been publicly supportive of Sancho. Speaking in January, he said:
“For me, he’s doing very well. I am quite surprised with Jadon because I knew him already, and I knew what to expect, but in terms of consistency, he’s doing very well.”

United’s Perspective: A Deal They’ll Gladly Accept?

Sancho’s departure from Manchester United was largely due to his fallout with former manager Erik ten Hag. United originally signed him from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for a hefty £73m fee, but he failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.

His unsuccessful stint in the Premier League has raised concerns over whether he can ever rediscover his Bundesliga form. If Chelsea proceed with the £25m permanent signing, United would likely consider it a favorable outcome, allowing them to recoup some of their investment.

Can Chelsea Revive Sancho’s Career?

Sky Sports’ Zinny Boswell summed up Sancho’s current predicament:
“Jadon Sancho’s attempts to relaunch his career at Chelsea have so far fallen flat, and the emergence of this get-out clause only serves to highlight how far his stock has fallen.”

While his initial performances at Chelsea hinted at a resurgence, his struggles mirror his time at United—low confidence, risk-averse play, and a lack of consistency. If Chelsea proceed with the permanent deal, they will be banking on him rediscovering the form that made him a star at Dortmund.

For now, the decision rests with Chelsea: pay £25m and hope Sancho finds his spark, or take the £5m penalty route and cut their losses. One thing is clear—this transfer saga is far from over.
